Abstract
Cromolyn Sodium (Disodium Cromoglycate) is a new drug that has been reported to be effective in the prophylaxis of allergic asthma. It is administered by inhalation and is virtually ineffective orally.
1. The mechanism of action of Cromolyn Sodium is uncertain: although it does not prevents the
combination from disrupting mast cells & thereby releasing Spasmogen.
2. There are considerable differences in its effect in different tissues and in different species. It is
effective in the lungs of human subjects and in only a limited number of animal species.
3. Recent observation, it may possess Alpha-adrenergic blocking properties.
4. Complete relief or considerable improvement is most likely in young patients with extrinsic asthma. 5. Improvement may be reflected, such as 1) reduction in the number of attacks, 2) reduced cough and sputum, 3) reduced bronichodilator and Corticosteroid requirement in 40% in approximately 2/3 of cases.
6. Cromolyn Sodium is prepared as a powder in capsule containing 20mg of drug dispersed with lactose, and is inhaled through a specially designed insufflater.
